Developing public libraries in Tanzania

The public library service has a proud history in Tanzania. Building a national library service has had its ups and downs but expansion has recently resumed in rural areas through the building of alliances with members of parliament and district councils. In rural areas internet access is not always possible; and though the means of communication has been transformed by mobile phones, printed material is likely to be valued for many years to come.
